History of Litchfield Area Mentorship Program
  • 2005 – 2006: Litchfield Kiwanis originated the idea of a mentoring program
  • July 2006: First meeting with representatives from numerous Agencies to discuss how this mentoring program could exist
  • July 2006 – Present: Meetings held on monthly basis to fine tune details
  • September 2007: Obtained incorporation status with State of Minnesota to become non-profit – assisted by Larry Jensen, Attorney at Law, Thomton, Sperry, Jensen & Keithahn Law Office
  • October 2007: Obtained initial office space with Dr. Tancabel at Litchfield Eye Center
  • December 2007: Filed 1023 with IRS for 501(c)(3) non-profit status – assisted by Dave Corneil, CPA, Conway, Deuth & Schmiesing, PLLP. Non-profit status approved in Feb. 2008
  • December 2007: Obtained Kinship Inc. affiliation
  • December 2007: Started presentations/media relations
  • January 2008: Grant process/Recruiting coordinator

What is Mentoring

Youth mentoring programs perform an increasingly vital function by bringing children and youth into contact with committed, caring adults in order to build attitudes and skills that will help them be productive and fulfilled citizens.

Mentors and Mentoring
  • Connecting adults with youth to form a trusting relationship/friendship that is a positive aspect of a child’s life.
  • Can be for ANY child who may be lacking support or guidance.
  • Assists a child with possible social skills, self-esteem, family, school & peer issues to name a few.
  • Act as another person/liaison/role model for the child when listening/participating in activities with each other.
  • Can be done as an individual, couple or family.
  • Is more successful with active parental involvement/support.
  • Proves to be more successful when focusing on the youth in all areas of their lives instead of just areas of concern.
  • Value the youth’s input.
  • Matches to be made based on common interest/time commitment.
